Critical Approach
Another way to look at hypoplastic left heart syndrome is through the critical theory. This looks at the way that social inequality looks at different conditions. But this is rather difficult because not only is hypoplastic left heart syndrome a rare condition. If you live in a community or country that does not have the resources it is impossible to track how many people have had and perished from this condition. Because they will simply list something else as the cause of death. Not on purpose but simply because they don't posses the knowledge of equipment to adequately diagnose or treat this condition. Another possibility is that the child is still born without ever knowing the condition ever existed. Leah Naomi who is pictured to the left was still born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, but her parents were aware of her condition because of prenatal ultrasounds. While we were in the hospital while Jacob was recovering from his procedures we meet many people with the same condition as him. Some people were there from as far away as Europe to receive treatment at Mott Children's Hospital with their logo pictured below. This obviously shows that not everyone has the resources to receive this kind of treatment, coming from another continent to receive superior treatment here in the U.S. That there are many factors that go in to the process of not only getting treated and having the facilities available. But also having the financial resources to be able to handle the burden of these procedures. Therefore it is easy to assume that given two pregnant mothers with the same condition with their unborn child, hypoplastic left heart syndrome. One having health insurance in the United States and the other receiving medical care from a free clinics. That there is a much greater chance that the woman with health insurance would have her baby's condition found and treated than the woman going to the free clinics. It is an unfair but true statement here in the U.S. which is why many are pushing for a national health care for all so that no one will be disadvantaged. But in the current state of this country it shows that we tend to ignore the problems of low income people simply because we deem that it is not cost effective. That is one of the biggest problems in this country, that the top one percent of Americans in income own more wealth than the bottom ninety percent combined. This is something that needs to be addressed because no life
is worth more than another. If we have the ability to save more peoples lives by extending medical coverage to more people than I feel it is our duty to do so.
